There has probably been a church in Shapwick since the 8th century.

We offer a warm welcome in Shapwick Church.

Our flagship event is the Cafe Church, which takes place once a month on the 3rd Sunday at 10am: it is designed to be attractive to anyone, from those who are first-time visitors to those who are regular churchgoers. The church is laid out cafe-style, with tea, coffee and bacon butties being served, along with vegetarian and gluten-free options. This leads on into an informal service at about 10:30. We have a more formal communion service on the 4th Sunday at 9:30.

The building combines modernity with ancient roots. It was re-ordered in 2002, which enables it to be used for a wide variety of events: as well as cafe church and regular Sunday services, it has hosted concerts and village events, and has been the venue for two highly successful wildlife photography exhibitions. The church itself dates back to about 1330, replacing the Saxon church which was located east of the village (which is now under a field at Beerway Farm).

Shapwick is one of six churches in the parish of the Polden Wheel (which also includes Ashcott, Burtle, Catcott, Chilton Polden and Edington). For the latest news and events, please do visit our website.
